Salernes
Located in the valley of the Bresque river, Salernes is best known for its fine ceramic wall and floor tiles (the ‘tomettes’), Salernes pottery and beautiful lava rock.
There are still many (small) factories manufacturing tiles and pottery, and Salernes also has a ceramics museum with a comprehensive overview of ceramics made in the region.
The unique 16th-century Saint-Pierre church with four towers is also well worth a visit. The church is located in the centre of Salernes amidst characteristic alleys with 17th-century houses.
In Salernes you will find several bakeries, several supermarkets, banks and a post office. Around the market square in the centre of Salernes are numerous terraces and restaurants. Weekly markets are on Wednesdays and Sundays.
The famous Gorges du Verdon are about 35 minutes from Salernes. It is well worth taking a (half) day for the breathtaking drive through this ‘Grand Canyon’ of France, and ending the day on one of the many beaches at the large reservoir Lac de Sainte Croix.
